Fall fishing is now upon us. BIG FISH are rolling along with the dropping water temps. As of Sept. 29th main lake water read a cool 62 degrees. The past weeks have been a bit windy, but have not detered big walleyes from posing for a daze photo session. 7 fish over 26 inches in the past 7 days. We've been pitching jigs or vertical jigging directly over big fish. Finding big marks on mud/rock pile transtional areas have been key. When finding these areas also keep a close eye on pods of nearby baitfish. Many perch seem to be pulling some sort of bug out of the mud. Of course if you can locate a food source for baitshish you will quicly start to put the puzzle together for big walleyes. We've been utilizing the H20 Precision jigs in a firetiger pattern or gold. Still tipping our jigs with some sort of minnow meat, but will be making a transition to big plastics soon. Crappies continue to show up in quanity and quality!! Pods of slabs can be found deep or shallow. Kind of funny the different locations Rainy holds fish. Many different methods have been effective for these northwoods slabs, but a 1/8th pink jig or flu-flu tipped with a small shinner is a great start. Big pike are chasing big baits on breaklines adjacent to deep haunts or mid lake humps. Slinging big plastics, minnows or cranking big plugs have been effective!! Fishing will only become better untl ice up!! Time to get on up here!!

May 16th!!!

Wow with the late ice off the we're a couple weeks behind "Normal". Just finished filming a televison shoot with James Holst and IDO (In Depth Outdoors) for Early Season Pike! James and I really laid the wood to the BIG PIKE!!! We caught 9 pike 10lbs and over in the first 4 hours of filming. Look for this show to be aired next February as of course most all television shows are filmed a season before they are aired. Great Fishing with you James!!! We found our fish on a shallow water bite, and beat them up with suspending Bomber A's in a perch pattern.
Crappies are showing up adjacent to spawning grounds and I look forward to laying the wood to them with your group as they head into drop there eggs. We found water temps around 47 degrees in the back of bays, so it will be a bit for the water to warm enough to kick in the crappie spawn.
Walleyes have just pretty much spawned out, and the males will be staying back around spawning grounds as the females are most always on there way out. Find the walleye spawning grounds and work around it, and you'll likely put some tastey treats in the livewell. Take the digitals of the bruisers, and let em go!!!

March 2nd

Monster Pike are on there way in to there spawning grounds! Look for the action to really heat up in the later part of March. These Rainy Lake Gators are going to be devouring baits looking to gain needed energy for the upcoming spawn. Tip-up action and Jig Sticks will both be viable options to turn trophies!

Gi-Normous Walleyes will be starting to heat back up again after a bit of a mid-winter slowdown. These fish are beginning to become more active again. Edges of reefs will turn some fish with jigging spoons, raps, or dead sticks. Look for these fish to slowly start moving just outside likely spawing grounds.

Slab Crappies are to be had here on Rainy, and if your up for an adventure you just might catch a crappie of a lifetime. Possible 16 inch SUPER FREAKS!

Remember Rainy Lake Pike are open year-round. I highly encourage catch and release on these beasts as they lend themselves vulnerable to anglers up in shallow water on feeding binges. You can always tell I've been after pike over the next month as I"ll likely be all bandaged up. Can't think of a better way to give a little blood!

Bring your digital camera! Lets hunt some trophies! It is way more fun than reading about it!
